Many small towns are scattered along the two-lane roads that wind their way through the mountains, most of them built by the coal industry when they first came to the Appalachians to set up their mining operations. The only suitable building sites were along creeks and the headwaters of rivers, so the communities tended to take the shape of these narrow bands of level ground. Some of the towns might be only one or two streets wide but three to four miles long.
