J.D. Maggard built Maggard’s Cash Store in 1914 and, except for the time he served in World War I, operated it continuously until his death a few years ago at the age of 98. The store was used as one of the locations in the film, “Coal Miner’s Daughter”, and J.D., who was also a preacher, was asked by the director to play the part of the minister who marries Loretta and Dolittle in the movie. In typical fashion his response was “I’m too old to become a movie star.”
The store has been preserved in its original condition and is listed in Kentucky’s Historical Buildings’ Register.
